PERSONAL TASTE
We must buy art we love,afterall it is going to be on our walls for a long time.Whether it is figurative or abstract,it has to be something we like a lot.
EXAMINE
The material whether it is on paper,wood or canvas has to be observed carefully.Good finishing means that it will look best for longer.
ARTIST
It is a good idea to build up a picture of who created your artwork,their Curriculum Vitae,status and accolades they have gathered along the way as these will determine the price.
PROVENANCE
Provenance is the history of who it has belonged to,is another determining factor in its value.For example if a painting was owned by a prominent collector or came from a respectable gallery,it will automatically be worth more.
SUBJECTMATTER
Artworks of certain subject matter tend to sell more than others.For example if a painting was of a beautiful woman it will be worth more than of a man,but there may be exceptions sometimes.Cheerful scenes of sunny landscapes win over dark scenes.But it is worth noting that when we are talking about the work of a famous artist,these rules may not apply.
SIZE
size is a painting is also important.A painting of 20 inches by 20 inches will be less valuable than a 30 inches by 40 inches painting by the same artist.
TYPICALITY
If the artwork in question exhibits recognizable features of a famous artist,it will be worth more.For example a cubist painting of Picasso will typically cost more than one of his early landscapes because people associate picasso with cubism.
